In partnership with @religions4peace, @WorldFaiths, & @GUberkleycenter, @USIP held a virtual discussion this morning w global religious actors (Venezuela to Ukraine to Zimbabwe to Sri Lanka & beyond) to discuss responses to conflict dynamics & peace opportunities during pandemic.
Some observations: these religious actors are concerned about vulnerable people - refugees in crowded camps facing backlash from native populations, those who were already economically insecure going into this, those facing domestic violence, rural populations w/o access to care
They detailed rising political & social conflicts, at the same time some armed groups & govts are indicating willingness, or are already, ceasing hostilities. Interfaith groups in some divided societies are mitigating religious tensions & reinforcing public health directives.
They spoke to spiritual, emotional needs of communities & how they are providing the comfort & connection through religious practices in ways that are safe. This need is particularly acute during the holy seasons of the Abrahamic traditions this month. These needs will only grow.
So much more was shared by all. I left inspired and sobered by the conversation. I'm grateful for the many religious actors worldwide who are rising to this occasion to provide material & immaterial support to those in need in ways that are innovative, safe, and urgent.
