Who wants a thread of *fun* books to read while we’re staying safe at home?????
1. NEVERWORLD WAKE by @marishapessl. 5 friends die in an accident, wake up in a kind of purgatory, and a mysterious man tells them they have to unamimously vote on one person to stay dead, or the day repeats itself in a hellish loop. It gets wild 🌀🌀
2. RED, WHITE, & ROYAL BLUE by @casey_mcquiston. See what happens when America’s First Son falls for the Prince of Wales!!! Hilarious, charming, and will make you cry a bit. This book is IT, y’all.
3. MAGIC BITES by @ilona_andrews. I haven’t shut up about this series since I picked it up a year ago. Post-apocalyptic magic world set in Atlanta (!!), feat a badass mercenary named Kate, who is solving a mystery. It is the very definition of fun, and gets better & better.
4. THE LIBRARY AT MOUNT CHAR by Scott Hawkins. A group of apprentices called Librarians to a being they call Father (who may be god ???) try to unlock the secrets of the universe & ascend to power in the Library after he goes missing. Yes, it is as batshit as it sounds.
5. MY SISTER, THE SERIAL KILLER by Oyinkan Braithwaite. Korede is a good, accommodating woman that sometimes helps her beautiful sister, Ayoola,... dispose of boyfriends she’s killed. But things start to change when Ayoola sets her sights on Korede’s crush. Satirical & thrilling.
6. SIX OF CROWS by @LBardugo. Hop on the Grishaverse hype train before the Netflix series premieres later this year! 🚂🚂 Outcasts band together to perform an impossible heist. Very diverse & a story of found family. It’s SO GOOOOOD.
7. RECURSION by @blakecrouch1. People are stuck with vivid memories of lives they never lived, an occurance referred to as False Memory Syndrome. But what is real and what’s not? What’s the cause? This is a super fun read & made me emotional by the end.
8. SPINNING SILVER by @naominovik. A spin on Rumplestiltskin about a Jewish moneylender’s daughter named Miryem, who is better at the job. Magical fae figure this out and demand that she turn their silver into gold. There’s more to it, but trust me. It’s amazing.
9. GET A LIFE, CHLOE BROWN by @TaliaHibbert. Chloe, a computer geek living w/ chronic pain, has a near-death experience & makes a bucket list of things she never did, & she knows just the man who can help her check them off. This book is so sweet & also hot 🔥🥵🔥
10. THE STARLESS SEA by @erinmorgenstern. Zachary Ezra Rawlins discovers a snippet of his life recorded in a book that no one should know about. This discovery leads him on a journey to a subterranean library, uncovering secrets, clues, & magic. A book made for lovers of stories.
I have a lot of other recs where those came from, so let me know if you’re looking for something else & I’ll do my best to recommend a book to better suit your mood ☺️
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE. Thought of a few more that deserve to be on this thread! 😎
11. THE KISS QUOTIENT and THE BRIDE TEST by @HHoangWrites. Goooood romances with autism and Asian rep. The first book in the series is a role reversal Pretty Woman. I couldn’t stop reading either of these.
12. YOU DESERVE EACH OTHER by Sarah Hogle. Lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers romance. While 📸 perfect on the outside, they both want out of their engagement. Whoever bows out first foots the big wedding bill, so they prank each other ruthlessly, & along the way start having fun again.
13. THE STORIED LIFE OF A.J. FIKRY by Gabrielle Zevin. AJ is a cynical widow & owner of bookstore that’s failing. His most prized book is stolen and a toddler is abandoned at his store, left in his care. From there, his life begins to change in new & unexpected ways.
14. THE WINTERNIGHT TRILOGY by @arden_katherine. Set in a fantasy version of medieval Russia about Vasilisa, a girl who can see & communicate with the old spirits of folklore. Wintery atmosphere, magic, badass heroine, romance, adventure, & a horse sidekick!!! What’s not to love?
15. STEEL CROW SAGA by @NotLikeFreddy. Ever wanted to read a book that feels like an anime? Well, here you go!! Adventures with Pokémon-like sidekicks, set in a post-colonial Asian fantasy world. It’s brilliant, it’s fun, it will make you feel feelings.
16. TRAIL OF LIGHTNING by @RoanhorseBex. Thrilling dystopian novel with a kickass heroine, filled with Indigenous lore. After the world has flooded, Dinétah (of the Navajo revervation) has been reborn, and with it, gods & monsters. This is a treat!
17. THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO by @tjenkinsreid. Aging, reclusive Hollywood star chooses an unknown reporter to tell her life story to, unspooling a tale of ambition, friendships, and Evelyn’s great love. Such a good read.
