This is an unprecedented moment for tenant organizing and @DCTenantsUnion has been BUSY! Victories from the last few weeks include:
Two tenants in Columbia Heights got others in the building to call to their landlord and demand April rent cancelled. The wave of calls worked and no one had to pay rent this month!
Tenants in a luxury building in Brookland sent a letter demanding a rent decrease. This building has no TA and had never organized together, but got people involved via a listserv, Facebook group, and balcony happy hour
The @DCTenantsUnion pushed for a 2 year rent freeze to stop landlords from price gouging. The council heard our calls and today’s emergency legislation includes a freeze on rent increases through the end of the state of emergency
The @DCTenantsUnion hotline has fielded 60+ calls (in English and Spanish) from tenants who wanted to make demands but didn’t know how to start. One man living in an English basement was scared to take the plunge, but used DCTU’s form letter to negotiate a payment plan!
In addition to running the hotline, 50+ people have gotten organizing training on 6 calls with @DCTenantsUnion this week. To get involved in these trainings, sign up at http://dctenantsunion.org/join-us
