Let me try a follow up on my tweet on 5G, EM spectrum & #CONVID19 from professional point of view. I will try to use layman language as much as possible for us to understand.
1stly, what is 5G? This is the 5th generation network. The advent of information age started with the 1st generation analog mobile communication in the 80s. This is followed by digital mobile communication in the 90s referred to as 2nd generation 2G, then 3G, 4G & now 5G.
Everything from ELF to radar waves is often referred to as microwave in the electromagnetic spectrum. That's my area of specialization. Also, from ELF to ultraviolet, except the upper part of ultraviolet that overlap with x-ray is referred to as non-ionizing radiation.
This means that the electromagnetic radiation cannot ionize an atom (cannot remove an electron from the atom). This simply means it cannot cause any change to an atom.
Now to answer if 5G is harmful, 5G frequency is between 20GHz to about 90GHz. This is frequency is high when compared with other generation which stops at around 12GHz maximum. However, when compared with other non - ionizing radiation, the frequency is still very low.
The visible light, which is what your light bulbs emits has frequency that is about 1mil times higher. If 5G frequency will cause damage because of frequency, the visible light suppose to cause 1mil times damage than 5G.
Remember, the sun emits a combination of visible & ultraviolet radiation. Only the upper part of the ultraviolet radiation is absorbed by the ozone layer. The same thing applies to photon energy.
Another, excuse used in the viral voice note is the proliferation of masts in 5G transmission. Yes, because 5G transmits in millimeter wave, it will need about 10times more masts than 4G to cover the same area. This is much when observed from the surface.
However, when you consider the transmission power, a typical 5G mast transmits at between 1microwatts & 8 microwatts. 60watts bulb transmits about 60watts over the same distance. This means that the transmission power of your 60watts bulb is about 1mil times that of a 5G tower.
Like I said earlier, a 5G network will need about 10times more tower to effectively cover the same area as 4G. Let's assume that 5 masts are needed to cover a square kilometer for 4G, 5G will need about 50 masts to cover the same area.
One of the major fear of microwave communication is the heat generated, that's why you are advised not to keep your phone close to your body often because the heat can cause heating effect which might damage body cells & probably cause cancer.
This may look scary when you consider that you may be having 10times number of masts as you have now. However, think of how many light bulbs you will have within the same space in a densely populated areas & remember that a bulb generates about 1mil energy more than a mast
In my opinion whatever heat is generated by towers like that of bulbs is easily dissipated by the atmosphere. More scientific research needed to be done on this. I have done some research work on this with existing towers & I haven't seen any adverse effect.
From the little work I have done on radiation physics, I know that even ionizing radiation don't have much effects on body cells, that's why they are used to image the interior of the body. We are not talking about radioactivity as the producer of the viral voice note was alluded
