Senate Dems today proposing a “Heroes Fund” in next congressional bill to give hazard pay for frontline health workers of up to $25,000, equivalent to $13/hour, until crisis is over. The benefit would also include janitors, truck drivers, grocery store clerks, & transit workers.
The new proposal would be retroactive, Schumer says, and families of those essential workers who have already died would benefit.
Democrats are also calling for a "recruitment incentive" of up to $15,000 to recruit and retain medical workers
Schumer calls hazard pay "one of our very, very highest priorities" in the next congressional package
The proposal "would cap the total maximum premium pay at $25,000 for each essential frontline worker earning less than $200,000 per year and $5,000 for each essential worker earning $200,000 or more per year."
