Once there was a pious king named Uparichar Vasu. He belonged to Puru clan(पुरु वंश).

It is said that Uparichar was a just king who ruled with proper danda(दण्ड). People followed the rules of their respective Varnas, and there was no Varna Sankarta(वर्ण संकरता) anywhere.
Like every king out there, he had a weakness for hunting(मृगया), and went for it every week or so.

Once he became disinterested in the worldy affairs and decided to forsake everything. He left his everything behind and went for Tapas in a secluded forest.
Many years went by and he garnered a lot of Tejas via his austerities. So much so that Indra became concerned.

The great king of devas felt like it was some sort of conspiracy against his throne. He thought, "Why did he(Uparichar) left everything to perform Tapas?"
"Is he trying to get his hands on my throne?"

Thinking on these lines, he went to meet Uparichar. When the king saw Indra he felt surprised but happy at the same time.

He praised Indra and said, "अहो‌ शचिपति इन्द्र! मेरा सौभाग्य जो आप यहां पधारे।"
"Tell me, O King of Devas! How come you visited me?"

Lord Indra smiled and asked Uparichar to stop his Tapas. He talked to him for an hour or so, and convinced him go back to his kingdom.
Uparichar realised that he did a big mistake by leaving his kingdom just like that. Without a pious king to rule, a state becomes no less than an orphan.

When Indra felt like his advice worked, he gifted Uparichar an aircraft.
The aircraft was divine, made up of Quartz, and it had all the facilities in the world.

Next, Indra gifted him a garland called Vaijayanti(वैजयन्ती). The lotuses inside that garland remained fresh forever.
Those who wore that garland during war could never be hurt by any weapon.

At last, Indra gave Uparichar the most precious thing in the world — his friendship. Imagine being friends with the king of devas. What else can you ask for?
