There is a very serious problem that we have in South Africa, where companies expect black talent to charge less and do more work than their white counterparts. They talk about inclusion, but only when it comes at the cost of the most disadvantaged. I’m tired.
And then we must be afraid of tweeting truths like this, because it offends them. And they’ll take it out on you where it hurts the most, on your career, in your pocket.
I see this the most in emails that I get from black people who ask me to show them how to ask for a raise. Most aren’t even aware that they’re getting paid below industry standards, & when they realize, they get too scared to confront their employers about it. Meanwhile
Michelle is getting paid well above industry standards.
This conversation is about the real injustices that black people face in their pursuit to build careers & make money. I’m simply showcasing the inequalities. If other people’s painful lived experiences make you uncomfortable I can’t help you. We can’t avoid what we experience.
