Some @RoamResearch notes I've been taking while reading Democracy in America. I'm still thinking about the optimal methods for this kind of thing, right now this represents an effort at a moderately detailed summary of important / interesting points following the order of book.
I first read assigned passages (college class), lightly underlining key parts. After a break, I look at underlined portions and write paraphrased summaries with page citations, adding my own commentary or questions if any occur to me. This shall save much time w essays later
I'm still thinking about what level of detail I should include to make best of use of my time. Additionally, Roam allows one to quote specific blocks elsewhere, so it might be useful on occasion to quote blocks having to do with a particular theme or concept all in one place
As opposed to having them all in chronological order as they are now. Tagging concepts, terms like "township" or "Puritan" which I can now view on their own page everywhere they come up (on any page, technically, though only used in my notes for this book for now) also helps.
Anyway, this level of summarizing might be overkill tbh, not sure. *If* I write essay using this book it will def be extremely helpful. And when I do the readings in advance of the classes, even a week in advance, this will enable me to easily review material before class
The idea in the long run is that this, with a tagging system that lets you see every time a word is mentioned (displayed in screenshot below), wide ranging intellectual analyses and connections will be enabled to be done with ease. Excellent way to collect citations for them to.
