Love every older person coming up with the take that “hey my parents lived through the Great Depression and WWII and they didn’t complain about it.” Really? You think the New Deal came about because no one was mad or protesting in the streets? You think WWII left them unscarred?
My grandfather was a WWII vet. He won a Silver Star and was on the liberation force at Mauthausen. He also, I believe from what I’ve heard, had PTSD. He definitely drank and smoked too much, and died in his mid-60s as a result. Because trauma fucks you up.
And just google “Great Depression protests” and you will be served up a myriad of results about various protest movements that rocked the country
And man, didn’t we all used to joke about how our grandparents and great-grandparents never threw anything away because they lived through the Great Depression? THAT IS CALLED A TRAUMA RESPONSE
Also, know why midcentury America was obsessed with being anti-Communist? Because Communism gained an actual foothold in America thanks to the Great Depression, and capitalists were terrified of it
I mean, that’s essentially why we GOT the New Deal. It was a response to social unrest and an attempt to quell more radical movements from the left. And since the New Deal is largely responsible for the pleasant lives of the middle class (for white people, anyway) post war...
You would think people who romanticize that time would be more keen to preserve it rather than race each other to dismantle it piece by piece
