2020 #NFLDraft Prospect thread: Baylor WR Denzel Mims
we kick off by really seeing Mims in a nutshell. That is not a phenomenal route, but he's gifted enough that he makes the play anyway. The potential is there to be better, but he's already really, really good.
I said Treadwell wouldn't make it because all he did was win contested catches in college, and that's true, I said that. The difference is LaQuon is a below-average athlete. Mims is 97+ percentile. Teach him to use his gifts.
the other issue that gets pointed out a lot is drops. Drops are overrated in general but you do see some concentration drops and occasionally he lets the ball get too deep on him. Gotta pluck that before it gets to your pads.
Mims has phenomenal zone awareness, which Rodgers will appreciate immediately if he ends up in Green Bay. He understands how to get open and maybe more importantly how to "stay" open vs. zone.
ohhhhhh they had that one.
another instance of that contested-catch stat being a bit misleading. He ROASTED the corner and drew a PI. Makes a contested catch anyway.
excellent job plucking that. The exact opposite of the slant he ran before.
this is a MONSTER third down catch. For every drop we've got about three catches that he just shouldn't have made.
so this might sound dumb, but this is another example of the "separation" argument. Mims is literally trying to sell vertical and go back shoulder on AJ Parker. Blowing past Parker is counter-productive.
there's not a receiver in the class that works the sideline better than Mims, period full stop.
so much of what Mims was asked to do was on a vertical route tree. He's a master of "every release/stem looks like a fade". Fade, back shoulder, stutter go, hook, curl. When he did run other stuff, in games AND at the @seniorbowl he was effective.
here's a nasty out-breaker
that's so pretty.
underrated aspect of Mims' game. He will improve your run game. High effort, plus he's strong. Really em effs people (yes that is the technical scouting term).
for as much off-man and as much zone as is played in the Big 12, Denzel Mims has a really nice package of releases.
Mims fits well in Green Bay because he's a legit "X" or "Z". Adams can play inside or out, but Lazard, St. Brown might be slot guys, Shepherd is definitely a slot guy, Begelton is (probably) a slot guy. He's a legit outside threat and playmaker.
um... WHAT
