And this goes in particular for training in qualitative data collection and analysis rather than the more frequent discussions of case selection and the merits of KKV. Fieldwork prep in particular is much neglected, based on various conversations I've had
I fail to understand why we need separate and mandatory courses for various statistical methods, while we expect that one optional course in qualitative methods is enough to prepare people for extended fieldwork (under sometimes harsh conditions)
And: what this article doesn't touch upon is how the literature that is assigned in substantive courses provides a skewed view of what methods dominate in IR. If you take course after course that assigns 90% quant research you don't even realize that qual research is alive & well
...and that that's a viable road for you to take
