Hey #AcademicTwitter - do you have extra funds in your research account due to cancelled conferences this spring? Reallocate the funds to support your graduate students. Here are some suggestions: 1/8

1. Contact your PhD students and offer to sponsor them to attend the @BeyondProf career conference. PhD students are anxious about future careers right now. Do one of the few things you can to help them identify ways to move their careers forward. 2/8

2. Hire a student to do a research task that you have been meaning to get to. It gives them money and experience, and frees up your time to do other things. Win-win. 3/8

3. Offer to pay for your students’ statistical or other software expenses. Offer to buy books for their research projects. Think about the costs of research in your students’ research, and see if your research fund allows you to cover them. 4/8

4. Hire a student to help you prepare for remote teaching in the fall. Chances are very good that the fall term will be at least partially remote, and chances are also very good that you could do a better job of remote teaching with some support. 5/8

5. Ask your grad students directly: what costs are you currently paying? Then ask whoever knows the rules for your research fund: which of these costs could I possibly cover? 6/8

6. Whether or not you can reallocate research funds to support your grad students, be sure to let them know that you are aware of the challenges that they are facing, the stress they are feeling about their research and their futures. Listen to their concerns. 7/8

Grad school is a stressful time for many students at the best of times. Understand that your grad students need your mentorship and support right now. Be there for them. 8/8
