In 2015/16, Dani Alves was moving into his final season at Barcelona and was 32. He put up solid numbers across the board and continued his telepathic partner ship with Leo Messi and Neymar.

His radar and heatmap indicate a high involvement in all phases of Barça's play.

This has been an excellent season for Trent. He has chipped in with significant end product, with 2 goals and 13 assists in all competitions.

Again, Trent's numbers are reflective of a high involvement in attacking play, with 2.6 key passes and 2.99 chances created p90.

What is to be noted here is that this was an Alves that was on the wrong side of thirty and this is a Trent that has not hit his prime yet. The goal here is to compare their roles in their respective sides.

With teams defending narrower than ever (in the Prem) Liverpool has been forced to play wider than before. Therefore, their creative mainly comes from the wings, and the full-backs in particular. Trent's high numbers are a testament to this.

The same sort of creative burden did not fall on Alves, especially with Messi on the same wing. Dani acted as more of a facilitator, moving into channels and playing off the more advanced midfielder and Messi. He did not have the same sort of end-product responsibility.

Both are elite full-backs, no doubt, and while comparisons may be a bit premature, it is clear that Trent is headed to the top. Whether he will replicate Alves's all-round game or not remains to be seen.

He is not that close right now.

In the radars above, Alves outranks Trent almost everywhere although Trent has the superior end product (which maybe reflective of the team's style of play).
