guys look at this picture i just edited 🤣🤣🤣 #GiggleFest2020
So basically the joke is that it’s an edited “The Slap” status update for a @VlasicStork brand jar of pickles of the dill variety. there’s just so much to unpack with this picture’s abundance of comical qualities. allow me to elaborate on just why this pic is a chuckle & a half..
NOTE: it’s up to you whether the personified pickles refers to the jar itself, the pickles in it, a singular pickle etc. I use all of these interchangeably throughout my explanation for the joke, however it doesn’t affect the content, either way it will be funny. Hope this helps.
A) For context, The Slap, not to be confused with the infamous sti “the clap” (streetname for gonorrhea), is a fictitious social networking platform. The Slap is used by characters that attend Hollywood Arts HS in the hit Nickelodeon television series “Victorious”—
B) Also for context, I will explain what a pickle is and what it means to be of the full variety. According to Oxford dictionary, a pickle is “a small cucumber preserved in vinegar, brine, or a similar solution.” They come in multiple varieties such as sweet and dill, as shown—
B2) A pickle of the dill variety, as shown in the joke, is simply a small cucumber that has been soaked in a solution that happens to also contain dill. Dill is just an herb of the celery family. Now the type of pickle in the picture is relevant to the pun.
C) According to http://dictionary.com , “Boujee is hip-hop slang for something "luxurious in lifestyle yet humble in character," influenced by and often interchanged with the slang bougie.” I’ve utilized the latter spelling in the image to describe how to pickle jar is feeling.
NOTE:The purpose of this thread is not to provide info on “The Slap”, words, pickles, dill, the process of pickle making, or anything of relation. If you are interested in those topics feel free to do your own research. See my task at hand is to explain the joke pictured above...
Now that I’ve provided context, allow me to proceed with explaining the joke above which is displayed in image form. I’ve also included the same image in this subtweet to provide easier navigation. I’ll just list off why the picture is funny and explain why I think so.
1) Both the @VlasicStork jar of pickles of the Kosher Dill Wholes variety and the aforementioned kosher dill whole pickles within the jar are inanimate (not alive) objects and therefore cannot act on their thoughts like people can.
1E) It’s funny to show pickles posting a status update because it is imposible for an inanimate object to do this!!! I’ve utilized personification by showing a jar of dill pickles posting a status update about its feelings. Indicating that the dill pickles could even feel is—
1E) absolutely hilarious because pickles can’t feel! And in the picture the “pickles” (when i refer to the “pickles” writing the status it’s really me, since I made the picture) status update is a pun regarding its type, dill. It’s funny pretending pickles can feel.
2) The “Pickles” posted to The Slap
2E) This is funny because out of all social media platforms, the one portrayed is The Slap. Since The Slap only functionally exists within the fictitious Victorious world, it adds an element of humor. The status in the image looks as if it really was posted to The Slap—
2E) This element of making something made up appear as if it could be real is EXTREMELY comical because it provides an escape from reality for the viewer. Similarly, this popular Victorious reference has the ability to spark memories of funny moments from the hit TV show—-
2E) with people that have seen it. This combination of comical sources really embellishes the joke as a whole. This is a complex theory to explain, just know that multiple layers of content really makes this joke funny.
3) Writing that the pickles feel as if they’re a “big dill” is a play on words for “a big deal”
3E) This is funny because instead of saying the pickles feel like “a big deal” I said “a big dill” which sounds similar to it’s intended meaning. This refers to the type of pickles (vlasic kosher dill wholes) that are pictured above. It’s just a huge play on words.
4) The pickles posting that they “feel” (1) important implies a pickle hierarchy
4E) In this comical world where pickles can feel and think, the feeling of being “a big dill” (3) that the pickles feel implies that they have made their own scale of worth in which they have utilized in order to measure their own importance.
4E) This is funny because it is super relatable!!! It is common for humans to measure their own self worth, and hopefully you can all relate to feeling like “a big dill”. It’s also comical to think of a pickle judging itself.
4E) To add a layer to this juicy lasagna of a joke, imagine the pickles reflection on itself and thinking: “Dang I am just the right shade of green!” that means that it thinks how it looks is important! Or “Wow I have just the right amount of pickles in this jar”—-
4E) This implies that the pickle places it’s worth on it’s contents. Or “So many people love dill pickles!” (I personally do not like pickles of any kind but many people do) which means it places its importance on its ability to help others.
4E) These aspects just add to the joke and really drive the dill pun home. Also, they are bound to not feel important some days. This is both relatable and sad. I hope that the pickles know that they are worthy of love and happiness 🌸
