Let's talk for a moment about the unbalanced effect of the COVID-19 crisis. Nearly, 17.5% of Hispanics and 27.9% of Blacks work in Education and health services. Almost 1 in 5 Blacks work in health care and social services. Start thread 1/n @AEACSMGEP @NEAEcon @ASHE_ASSA
Combining Education & Health Services and Leisure & Hospitality accounts for 30% of Latinx and 38% of Black Employment. Just 16% of Latinx workers and 20% of Black workers have the ability to work from home, compared with 30% of white workers. 2/n https://ampr.gs/2V8sQkv
30% of Black and 20% of Latinx college-educated households, would not be able to afford to pay all their bills after a $400 emergency expense, nearly 60% and 50%, respectively, for non-college-educated Black and Latinx households. 3/n https://bit.ly/3aPWqBX
Next, think about the boom in multi-generational households. 1 in 5 households are multi-generational. 57% of Black and 35% of Hispanic children ever live in an extended family, compared with 20% of White children. 4/n https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2018/04/05/a-record-64-million-americans-live-in-multigenerational-households/
Let's add to this population density. We know that minority groups tend to live in metropolitan areas. Probably with a higher density of housing. To get a sense consider this population density map. 5/n https://demographics.virginia.edu/DotMap/index.html
Finally, there are some cultural differences that may increase the spread in these communities. For example, it is common in Latinx/Hispanic cultures to greet each other with a hug or kiss. #SocialDistancing Let's keep abuela healthy n/n
