Among Germans and many other peoples, sacrifices were practiced in bogs. These places are seen as passages between the world of the living and of the dead, trapping them in a way that they are in neither of them.
I suggest these practices as being symbolically an act of rejection of one's reincarnation. Indeed as Tacitus said, the crippled, cowards and fugitives (I.e without honour) were sacrificed in a dishonorable way.
Quoting : "They hang the traitors and the fugitives on the trees, and drown the cowards, the infirm and those who refuse to fight in the mud and the marshes, covering them with branches."
