Music industry discussion:
From my perspective an independent artist’s priorities should involve the following: Putting asses in seats, data collection, and owning one’s masters (at the very least owning a considerable piece to benefit from streaming/licensing) (A THREAD)

Unfortunately data collection (email addresses, phone numbers etc) seems to be low priority for many acts. Said decision can only prove as a detriment to an act’s brand, as a chunk of passive income is left on the table.
If an artist acquires a considerable amount of data, they can successfully place their fans in die hard, and causal fan tiers. Forging a tier specific practical sales plan is crucial.
Back in 05 I had my own website. This was before the social media boom. I released a newsletter monthly to those on my email list. I started my list selling my CDs on CD baby. I was able to garner 2k email addresses in a relatively short time.
I made some pretty good sales, but I didn’t have the resources keep up with demand. It all boils down to resources.
Social media sites are powered on the promise of providing lead lists to advertisers.

I NEVER shared the contents of my list with anyone, although I was asked a few times. If you are going to run a business, always ensure you have a plan to cut out the social media middle men. If you depend on them for your lead lists, you’ll pay for it eventually.
Strangely enough back then I had the passion, but paltry resources. Now I have the resources to pull off whatever I want, but I lack the passion for music I once had.
