Part 3 of our EBP Takeover…. JARGON BUSTING! The list we have put together is by no means exhaustive, so If you want to know any others just drop a line and we can help out! In this thread there will be some of the most used terms and what they mean!
Qualitative – Evidence which utilises experiences, viewpoints or feelings. Qualitative evidence is descriptive, it seeks to tell us what someone thinks or feels about something. Remember it as telling us the QUALITY of something. #PaedsRock #CYPStNN
Quantitative – Evidence which uses statistics and measurable criteria to test or assess something. It relies on scientific measure to provide us with information and is objective, a perspective based in fact, in things quantifiable and measurable #PaedsRock #CYPStNN
Generalisability – How useable the findings are to a greater number of people. Generalisable research is one which we can use better for a larger group of people! Remember it as using it for the GENERAL public. #PaedsRock #CYPStNN
Sample – The test subjects. A sample is the people or the thing we are measuring. In quantitative studies large samples are better as they provide more information to base conclusions on, making the data more generalisable. #PaedsRock #CYPStNN
Validity – In QUANTITATIVE evidence extent to which a test or instrument is really measuring what it claims to measure. Do the questions or way the test is designed accurately measure what the researchers want to know. #PaedsRock #CYPStNN
Reliability – In QUANTITATIVE how consistent the measure will be over time or across different researchers. Can the findings be repeated again, if so this indicates a good test. #PaedsRock #CYPStNN
Sensitivity – In QUANTITATIVE how the test is able to measure changes over time in patients who are changing #PaedsRock #CYPStNN
