This country, and many other western countries, have an obsession with sick people working. From messaging in cold meds adverts right the way through to people who are terminally ill being denied benefits, what they want is clear: if you're sick, you must work. https://twitter.com/tombradby/status/1247203405027840001
This is, of course, wildly unhealthy. It's unhealthy for the patient, because rest speeds recovery. It's unhealthy for colleagues, because a sick person coming into work is likely to infect others. It's really fuckin unhealthy to society because [gestures wildly at pandemic]
And in roles like Prime Minister, it's particularly bad to have a sick person working because do you know what makes for really fucking terrible decisions? Having a fever. Last fever I had, I ended up texting a bunch of exes telling them I missed them.
And that sick-people-working mentality is 100% fuelling the pandemic. One example is the UK's dismal seven days guidance. In the rest of the world, you're isolating for 14 days after end of symptoms. In the UK, its seven days after the *start*. This exposes people unnecessarily.
I'm as guilty of going to work sick as anyone. I've loaded up on the Day Nurse to head into work while essentially a snot monster on crystal meth, and other people *have* caught my germs (just colds, but still). I should be spending those days at home whizzing on pseudoephedrine.
Anyway, there was little infrastructure in this country for staying at home while sick, until recovered but GUESS WHAT BITCHES now there sort of is, so stay off while poorly, even if its just sniffles. Build good habits.
Ok another story of me working while sick when I shouldn't have been: discharged from hospital after a bad seizure I went straight into the office where I just babbled absolute nonsense and distracted everyone all day, punctuated by yelling IM FINE
Basically, take the time to recover. Don't work while ill, and for the love of god don't go into your office when you've got an infectious disease.
This is a facet of that deadly ideology in capitalist countries - that illness is weakness and you should bust on through. In combination with the valorisation of working while sick, it produces lethal conditions https://twitter.com/Sisyphusa/status/1247457266980343808?s=19
