A thread on @TaxJusticeUK's big 3,000 person poll on attitudes to public spending, tax and wealth. It was carried out as we went into lockdown. Full details here: https://www.taxjustice.uk/blog/new-poll-reveals-concern-about-the-state-of-public-services-and-support-for-higher-taxes-on-wealth 1/
There's a real awareness of how threadbare our public services are after a decade of austerity. Large majorities think that homelessness, foodbank use and inequality have all increased over the last 10 yrs 2/
74% want to see the wealthy paying more taxes, including 64% of Conservatives 3/
Only 24% ruled out paying more taxes themselves and a similar percentage (26%) of respondents want to see tax cuts for everyone 4/
When we asked about specific policy changes, 66% said income from wealth should be taxed at the same rate as income from work, 69% support making council tax more reflective of a property's actual value and 63% support an annual wealth tax 5/
Large majorities felt that tax avoidance is morally wrong, even if it's legal and 74% say it's wrong for the wealthy to use accounts to avoid paying their fair share 6/
67% support higher taxes on companies’ profits, including 61% of Conservative voters. 7/
After this crisis is over, we need to say "never again" and properly invest in our public services. Higher taxes on wealth & companies are one way of doing this. Read my piece in @thetimes laying out the case for a much more progressive tax system https://www.taxjustice.uk/blog/never-again-after-this-crisis-fades-we-need-to-fix-our-threadbare-social-safety-net Ends/
And a final ps - thanks to @FProvFoundation for funding this public attitudes work. It's vital we understand where the public is at so we can make the strongest arguments for reform
