We divided fMRI tasks on the type of emotion regulation paradigm utilised (affective modulation, behavioural control, and cognitive modulation). In addition, we also looked at resting state functional connectivity studies. 2/5

While a meta-analysis wasn't possible due to heterogeneity in study designs, we used a label based approach to quantify the number of studies with common findings, and split them into ROI and whole-brain results for task-based studies (see figure). 3/5
Essentially, while findings were largely inconsistent, especially for whole brain studies, some patterns emerged. Findings for resting-state were found to be more consistent, with lower resting cortico-amygdala connectivity reported in both depression and substance use. 4/5
In addition, we found that there was sparse research on youth substance use and substance use disorders in this space.
