I did say I was gonna open a discussion about this - particularly about UK black women in sports and some of the reasons why I think they tend to stop at school. I will find time today and make a thread. https://twitter.com/nbalavish/status/1247216856081014784
Okay so first of all. The brothers take above with the comparison to the US is whack because he’s going off no stats whatsoever. Ain’t got a clue. Me personally I wanna address UK black women in sports
The potential in black women when it comes to sports in the UK is crazyyyy. In school some of your best female athletes were most definitely black.
However, sports in the UK for women in general and the support for it is heavily capped. Men have it a lot easier than women because people pay to watch men do sports. They don’t pay that same big big money or care to watch women. Sports is naturally associated with men
Many factors come into why you don’t see a lot of black women in sports and imma speak on my observations as a black woman still currently in sports.
1. Money. Scholarships in the UK for women aren’t really existence. Correct me if I’m wrong but they’re not really a thing the way they are in America. Here, pay to play the sport loool. And not everybody can afford that especially if at a young age your parents aren’t supportive
2. Supportive parents/Dedication. Playing sports to a high level at a young age requires support. Taken to matches/training which most likely isn’t close to home on a weekly basis. That requires support and dedication
I was playing for London & South east England preping us for England trials and our training was based in Surrey. I’m from East London - this was not an easy trip for a young girl aged 14 to be making on her own. I needed support.
White People generally support their kids a lot more than Black parents do when it comes to sport - that’s facts. I was lucky to have some support from my own but it still wasn’t enough imo.
3. You’re generally more inclined to participate in activities when you see some of your own. We’re already a minority so more time we will be outnumbered. Black girls generally didn’t do sports outside of school level because of some of the factors I previously mentioned
I represented my borough, county level, London & South East England and went on to England trials. The higher up I went the less of my own I saw. However, the few of us that were there stuck together tbf. I was the only person from my entire borough at Regional level at the time
@DinhoSZN I’m missing points - my head has gone blank and I’m sure there were more. Do you remember what we discussed?
