7 April ‘94: Start of a Genocide.
We must never forget Rwanda. I 1st went to Rwanda in April 2002. We went as part of our Master’s programme. We were told that going there & speaking to survivors of the genocide will change our lives & how we choose to apply our education.

2/4 We met with neighbours who had killed their neighbours, lecturers who were maimed by their own students, fathers who killed their ”half-Tutsi” kids, a mother who while hiding with her 3 children had to kill 1 of them ‘cos he was crying & would have exposed them to killers...
3/4 We went to a school where Belgian peacekeepers pulled out even though the school was surrounded by Hutu militia, 1000s of people were killed in after that abandonment. We heard about complicit priests. We met with people who risked their lives to protect fellow human beings.
4/4 I have never read a book that adequately explains this Genocide. There are phenomena that academic books can’t explain; can’t quite apprehend.
Going to Rwanda changed me forever. We must never forget Rwanda.
