The biggest issue is really, well, the entire conclusion of the paper "both surgical and cotton masks seem to be ineffective in preventing the dissemination of SARS–CoV-2 from the coughs of patients with COVID-19" 2/n
The study just does not have the #s or the robustness to make such a strong conclusion (even saying "seem to be" is too strong) 3/n
In contrast the paper discussed in this Tweet that was also just recently published is much much much more comprehensive study of masks and viral dissemination https://twitter.com/bencowling88/status/1246004236590010369?s=20 4/n
h/t to @ferrisjabr and @CT_Bergstrom for there comments about the "ineffective" mask paper and pointing to the more detailed study (e.g., https://twitter.com/ferrisjabr/status/1247291071526096897?s=20) 5/n
And see also other posts / comments from two of the senior authors on the more comprehensive mask study @bencowling88 and @Don_Milton
Note - I am not saying "masks are perfect" "all mask recommendations are correct" but rather that this study claiming that masks of various kinds are "ineffective" with coughing patients just does not have the evidence to make that conclusion
