The data is trickling in, and it reveals disproportionately high rates of both #COVID19 infection as well as mortality in Black communities.

This is an epidemic within the pandemic. A crisis within a crisis.
And it will require a comprehensive approach.

Look at data 👇🏽

What do we need?
To start:
1️⃣ All states and federal gov need to collect race data
AND
2️⃣ A collaborative, community-executed, state appropriated, federally supported, targeted response to address all barriers and risk factors that ➡️ worse outcomes for our Black communities.
As @DrIbram expertly lays out in the above 2 articles, our African-American population is getting hit at an alarmingly high rate with #COVID19 infection and THEY ARE DYING AT SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER RATES.

We cannot look away, we cannot excuse this, we cannot NOT do something.
Addressing this disparity means you must first acknowledge the racist policies and structures that have been in place that provided the foundation for these barriers to exist in the fireplace.
Once we know that, we can begin to problem-solve.

From how we deliver education on the virus and its symptoms, to whom you should call if you feel unwell, to community outreach on importance of social distancing, to correcting misinformation, to being aware of resources...
To understanding that social distancing the way me and you do it is a luxury many can’t afford, to acknowledging food and economic insecurity, to recognizing how hard it is to parent children who are at home when you have to work...
To knowing that implicit and unconscious bias are still playing out their ramifications EVERYDAY, and are most certainly affecting how Black patients get their care, even in a crisis, even more so in a crisis (chaos worsens bias)...
These are all some ways that #COVID19 is not the great equalizer, but rather, the great MAGNIFIER.

It will worsen and enhance any pre-existing condition in our society, including our frailties and inequities, and most definitely our racial disparities.
Let’s keep pushing for this data and I encourage you to come together in your own organizations to have a community-based, equity approach to your COVID response.

We have started these efforts at our institution and we don’t have a moment to waste.
Let’s also keep this effort as collaborative as possible. If anyone wants to discuss efforts re: this, DM me and we can chat further.
