For those of you newly working at home—or spending more time at home—and looking for new music, here& #39;s a thread of some of my favorite Japanese artists!

If you& #39;re like me, you might find it better for your background music to be non-English so you don& #39;t latch onto words. Enjoy!
Quick disclaimer: a lot of these will likely be familiar to folks who& #39;ve spent time in Japan or follow Japanese music! Most have charted and/or are prob karaoke staples at JoySound. This isn& #39;t an "obscure J music you& #39;ve never heard of" thread!

Also, feel free to add your favs!
First up is フレデリック/Frederic

Like The Killers? You& #39;ll like Frederic. Very dancey pop rock with punchy vocals. All 4 albums since their 2016 debut have cracked the Oricon Top 10 rankings.

Here& #39;s "Oddloop" (オドループ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCp2iXA1uLE">https://www.youtube.com/watch...
Other good tracks from Frederic:

"Only Wonder" (オンリーワンダー)

"Owarasenaito"">https://www.youtube.com/watch... (オワラセナイト)

"Re-re-repeat"">https://www.youtube.com/watch... (リリリピート) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjAxLbmy83E">https://www.youtube.com/watch...
Next is サカナクション/Sakanaction

For when you& #39;re in a more dramatic, emotional, electronic mood. Hard to pin down a genre, but they incorporate elements of dance, disco, new wave, and rock.

Here& #39;s 新宝島 ("Shin Takarajima") and its great music video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIlZCmETvsY">https://www.youtube.com/watch...
(Shin Takarajima is more straight rock-y than most of their tracks, but seeing as I alone likely account for 1 million of the video& #39;s 126 million views, I& #39;d be remiss not to start there)
Other good tracks from Sakanaction:

"Identity"

"Holy">https://youtu.be/2gc5PR_Nb...
https://youtu.be/CWe7oDJgtrQ

"Slow">https://youtu.be/CWe7oDJgt...
Sakanaction is very aware of their 70s/80s vibe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxqYUbNR-c0">https://www.youtube.com/watch...
I& #39;d be remiss not to, after linking that video, mention/praise Mariya Takeuchi and her hit 1984 track "Plastic Love," which has had a resurgence in popularity thanks to the Vaporwave movement. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Gj47G2e1Jc">https://www.youtube.com/watch...
Might do a whole 70s-90s Japanese music thread later, but if you& #39;re not into the more recent stuff I& #39;m linking in this thread, go dive into more city pop and its succesor: Shibuya-kei!

(Tatsuro Yamashita)
