(thread) komaeda is not "insane" or "crazy" and saying such is incredibly ableist. he has dementia and suffers from debilitating mental illness. this is plain to see, as he says it to hajime and pretty much all of his actions in canon back up the fact that he is mentally ill.
the reason he fixates on hope and despair so much is because he draws the parallel of hope/despair to his own talent and how it functions. his luck operates on a "the awful bad precedes an even stronger good", which is how the politics of hope/despair work in his head.
he views other ultimates as godsends, paragons of hope because their talents are so useful and wonderful and his is Not (to him) because it has hurt/k*lled everyone and everything important to him in his life. it's ruined his life and therefore he sees himself as dirt.
since his bad luck (despair) brings about an even greater good luck (hope), he applies this logic to the other ultimates, and tries to genuinely coach them into NOT spiraling too far into despair because he admires them all so much and wants to see them shine.
the reason nagito treats hajime so much differently after he's given the files is because he ENVIES hajime for not having a talent. since his has ruined his life so much, he would LOVE to be talentless. it's a privilege he's always wanted. he craves a world without talent.
having someone he admired so genuinely and got so close with suddenly be revealed as someone who has something nagito DESPERATELY wants destroys him. he thought they were similar! he took comfort in hajime's presence because he didn't feel pressured by an 'amazing' talent.
but finding out that hajime is talentless hurts because it's Something Nagito Wants. and hajime Wanting a talent is worse because "Why Would You Want What I Have, It Ruined My Life"
to extrapolate on his behavior post-files, finding out that everyone on the island is a remnant of despair sours nagito majorly because he's been trying so hard to fight AGAINST despair. and finding out that it doesn't matter fucking sucks! that's why he does all the wild shit +
he does to get the traitor to step forward--he wants to eradicate all of the remnants to keep them from getting back out into the world. all of nagito's actions make SENSE and aren't "crazy" or "insane". describing anything he does as such is inherently ableist.
like. this isn't really up for discussion. it's just a fact.
this is kind of a sparknotes version of everything as i could go into way more detail if i wanted to but. please just try to fucking understand this.
