Switching hats to Officer Beckwith for a few minutes...
In this community we are focused on cyber threats but in this thread I want to touch on some physical threats and how to protect yourself. Please pass these on to family and friends. 1/
A lot of people are unemployed currently and need to find alternative methods for living. Unfortunately this results in theft and breaking and entering calls. Some ways to keep yourself safe include:
- Keep your doors locked at all times, even during the day. 2/
- Keep your garage door closed even if you are working in the yard. Criminals drive around neighborhoods during the day to scout for valuable items in garages.
- Close your curtains/blinds at night for the same reason. Your large TV or computer equipment can become a target. 3/
- Keep your car key fob on your nightstand, next to you or on you. If someone breaks in you can activate your car alarm which will spook the intruder.
- If you are walking alone (lots of us are getting out for exercise) bring a phone or let someone know where you are going. 4/
- Watch your children and pets while they are outside. Both bring a good paycheck when sold, and criminals know both are likely outside because of the pandemic. - --- Talk to older kids about the risks and not to allow strangers to approach.
(This is dark but true) 5/
- Don't keep valuables in your car, especially in plain view.
- Lock your vehicles
- Don't leave keys in lawnmowers, ATVs, motorcycles etc. this makes it too easy. 6/
- If you aren't expecting someone don't answer the door. Criminals will impersonate healthcare workers, census workers, and delivery drivers among others to get you to open the door.
- Inform your children of the same. 7/
- Mental health! Suicide attempts and calls are up significantly. Please check in with friends and family often. Especially those who are home alone during this time.
- If you are thinking of harming yourself please know you are loved. DM or call someone. 1-800-273-8255
Domestic Violence is also up. If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence and needs help, you can call 1-800-799-7233 or your local law enforcement. Also check out http://safeescape.org  if you are unable to make a call, you can send a message. @OSPASafeEscape
