Apologists for the police state will say that state governments have the power to do what they’re doing in an emergency. The problem is that there currently is no real emergency in many states. They have merely projected based on models that there will be one in the future.
Is it hard to see the slippery slope here? The government can erase your rights and destroy your business and lock you in your home on the assumption that possibly at some point in the future there will be an emergency that these measures will maybe protect you from.
“Better safe than sorry” is not a good enough reason to obliterate civil liberties and rob people of their livelihoods. Not nearly. But if we’re now agreeing that it is good enough, well then buckle up. The State now has a blank check that it will be happy to cash again and again
