Anyone here from #Greenville, #SouthCarolina who was around in the 1950s or knows someone they can ask to help me identify images of a structure fire from that time?
Following up on this request from Greenville area residents, here are a few images from the structure fire incident I am trying to identify. I am fairly certain (but not positive) that these are from 1954.
The 1st of those images show people gathering to look at the fire to the right of frame. The other 3 images show some potentially identifying structural elements. These are from an #8mm movie reel I'm trying to lock down details about. The footage shows this near train tracks.
Added note: 1954 was an intense year for fire incidents. The late summer through autumn saw a rash of large wildfires in immediate area. But January up through summer also saw a number of large structure fires as well...
...Perhaps the most notable being the fire at the Monaghan Elementary School (associated with the Mill) resulting in total loss. At first I thought these images were from that fire, but the footage is inconsistent with the known time of day and time of year of that fire.
There were numerous other large structural fires in the town that year (including the Graves Planer Mill and at least 1 other school fire). And knowing how dramatically a city scape can change over 60-70 years I am completely at a loss to pinpoint which one this one might be.
To circulate this around the area where those with relevant knowledge of these details, I'll start pinging folks I know are from the area. Hello @GreenvilleNews @ACrawfordWYFF4 Any chance you or someone you know might know about the details noted in this thread? Thank you.
