with boris in intensive care the obvious question of who will be pm is raised. in normal times if a pm died the queen would appoint an interim pm on the advice of cabinet whilst a leadership election of the majority party takes place, however because we are in the middle of
a pandemic it is v unlikely that a leadership election would even be viable, furthermore it could be months before it is viable. whilst cabinet could just pick raab as is the case atm, it’s likely there would be much disagreement over whether he has the mandate to govern as pm
firstly on the premise that he hasn’t been voted for by party members or the public. questions would be raised whether jeremy hunt should become pm, as he came second in the tory leadershio election, or if gove should be pm as he is seen as a better fit by many, in his own eyes 2
then there’s the opposition, which of course lost the last election and also would lack a mandate to govern, even more due to kier not being voted for to be pm at the last election. with the potential of bitter infighting behind closed doors and the lack of constitutional clarity
it raises several issues. unlike the US we do not have a chain of command and plans if the pm dies. and particularly in unprecedented times like rn, it’s even more confusing. the queen would have the power to make decisions herself, however this is very unlikely
which is why i tbink this has exposed the democratic system in the u.k. and shows just how much we need a written constitution. yes these are unprecedented times but who knows when it could happen again. if the pm is to die it’d be chaos. when the pandemic passes we urgently
need to look at our system and our country, and urgently need a written constitution. hopefully there will be a period of reflection jusr as there was aftwr ww2, where we see the clear gaps in our democracy, and on another note the clear failure of late stage capitalism
on the note of late stage capitalism, the clear cracks that were already known to many, are now brutally exposed. we need a period of total reflection upon our democratic processes, the way we govern and the system we live in, as our current system, has so clearly failed
