With the news about #term2 in Victoria, here is a thread from a secondary teacher about what to expect - tldr please be kind to us! 1. You are not expected to do this yourself - we have been prepping for this since late term 1 #COVID2019au
2. We are asking you to parent, not to be teachers. Please support your kids however you can - sometimes that is assistance with work, but often that it’s just providing a quiet space to work. #COVID2019au
3. Communicate with the school - if your household has lost employment, things are tense, or someone is sick, let us know! We are not monsters, we are empathetic beings who care about your child and will figure something out for you. #COVID2019au
4. We have never done this before. We are trying to transform our entire way of working and teaching within a few weeks. We are going to make mistakes. But please remember - we are trying our best! We care deeply about the education of your child. #COVID2019au
5. Value ALL subjects. Music, Art, Drama, Sport, Language etc. teachers are working just as hard to provide education. Don’t ignore these subjects or tell your child to not bother. Remember, it’s these subjects that are getting you all through this period! #COVID2019au
6. Be kind to yourselves and your kids. This is going to look different. We can’t expect it to be the same as before. Have high expectations of your kids, but within reason. We’re living through a horrible time. School is a great distraction, but don’t let it become a stressor.
7. PLEASE do not sit in class with your child! You wouldn’t sit at the back of year 9 English - this is the same. This is a great time to help them develop independence, not to 🚁 parent and ask the teacher questions. We love supportive parents, but not student ones #COVID2019au
8. Finally, BE KIND to your child’s teachers. We are working so damn hard to make sure your child isn’t disadvantaged. We have had meeting after meeting about how to juggle education with wellbeing. We are trying our hardest. We care. 💙 #COVID2019au #teachingfromhome
Oh god, spelling. *Often it’s just providing a quiet place to work 🤦🏻‍♀️
Also, one last thing. You’re not homeschooling, you’re parenting. Parents who homeschool plan, create, and assess learning, and it’s a full time job. You are most likely working a full time job while supervising, so don’t think you have to do everything. That’s what we are for!
