In this thread, I will do my best to show you how to create and sell your own online course.

Take it from someone who has been creating online courses since 2015 and has had considerable failures and successes doing it.

Here we go..

I'm going to be doing this thread based on my practical experience over the years and as well highlighting lessons I have learnt along the way.

1. Online Courses - What are they?

Online courses are self paced instructional or educational study materials (audio or video) mostly video that teaches a specific topic to a particular set of people and adds immense VALUE to them.

It means online courses are not just created anyhow.

They are created with the PURPOSE OF ADDING VALUE to your pre-determined audience.

Unlike a physical class or learning centre, online courses allow people study at their own pace and conveniences.

So many institutions abroad have their e-learning centres or online distance learning schools which allow anyone from anywhere in the world take their lessons after paying.

2. Why should you create Online Courses?

a. It will help create another stream of income.

b. It will establish you as an authority in your field of expertise.

c. It will provide solutions to the problems of many people.

d. It will add more value to people's lives.

Many people all over the world are looking for people that will provide solutions to them in ...

...one area of their lives or the other and are willing and ready to pay anyone who can provide such solution. It therefore behooves on you to position yourself to solve people's problems by providing solutions.

I have created more than 10 online courses over the course of 5 years and still counting and they bring in money for me from time to time. It's another stream of income for me as they keep cash flow steady.

Creating online courses has helped me become seen as an expert such...

... that people refer my services to anyone who needs them even when they had not yet patronized me at all.

Online courses also help to increase your business prospects as people who buy the courses can still buy other things from you as long as you provide immense VALUE.

NOTE THE WORD VALUE - Online courses are not shams but SOLUTIONS.

So, you should think - What solution will the online course I want to create provide in respect of a particular problem?

3 Taking Stock Of Your Expertise
You need to look deep down within you and draw out what you can do and also solves a problem for others.

So my question is, what do you know now?

What skill(s) do you have?

Do you know how to sew?

Do you know how to provide quality customer care?

Are you a trained accountant? Many people are having struggles with their accounting books/systems for their businesses and don't have the money to hire an accountant.

You can create an online course that will show them how to keep their accounting records.

Whatever profession you find yourself, you can create online courses that will teach others how to become better.

You can add value to their lives.

3. Identifying Your Target Audience.

Who is your course meant for?

Whose life will your course transform?

Whose business will get better with your online course?

Don't just create a course and believe people will come. No. If you do that, you are settling up yourself for failure.

This is where you need to draw up a customer avatar detailing demographics as well as psychographics information about your ideal customer.

I tell clients - the business you are into now or your expertise in your industry or business is a MONEY MAKING MACHINE.

It's a pool of unending streams of income if you only KNOW HOW to harness the various branches of your knowledge.

You then need to identify your target....

audience i.e the people who might be interested in your online courses.

You can conduct idea validation by doing structured surveys amongst your friends or colleagues.

You can also use facebook ads to guage the market if people will buy such online course.

4. How To Structure Your Online Course
Structuring your online course is very easy. Do you remember the simple way we wrote essay outlines in school?

Structuring your online course is as simple as- Introduction, Body and Conclusion, then further diving them into Sections or ...

...Modules just like book chapters.

If you are fashion designer, structuring online courses for your sewing classes will come to you naturally as you know the processes involved in designing and making different types of styles.

5. Tools for creating Online Courses
If you have a smartphone, you already have a tool for creating online courses.

Here are tools you can use right away to create online courses -

a. Smartphone - You can do a video or audio recording of yourself or have someone record you.

b. Use PowerPoint Slides - You then use a desktop recording software to record your screen while using a headset with microphone to record your tutorial/course

c. You can use your laptop's webcam to record yourself and also share your screen.

6. Packaging Your Online Course
Once you are done recording your online courses, all you need do is to upload them on online storage servers e.g. http://dropbox.com , google drive, etc..

You also need to know how to market your online courses in the right places and at the right times in order for your prospects to get to know it.

There are various ways to launch an online course. You can use the webinar funnel approach where you organize a webinar and teach..

...your target audience a part of your course and then sell the entire course to them.

You can also use the mini course funnel approach where you teach your target audience for 3-4 days free and then sell the course to them at the end of the mini course.

I have personally used this method to generate clients for my training programs.

There are still many more methods to selling your online course asides the ones I listed above.
