Ppl say they’ll have a conversation with you about something when you’re ready

There’s no time for ppl to get ready.

It’s time.

COVID is like every killer- Black ppl are disproportionately affected whatever type of killer due to racism but white ppl dominate the conversation
I experience the rage of A LOT of nonBlack people who get offended when I say: Your experiences aren’t like ours. We experience things you don’t.

Don’t tell me how posts specifically about medical racism is like that one time...
No one is diminishing your pain.
No one is saying you aren’t anxious or stressed.
What we *are* saying is that often public expressions of fear of victimization (from most sources) is based on stats about things that happen *to* Black ppl

and nonBlack ppl recenter themselves
I deal with ppl getting VIOLENTLY ANGRY bc I point out they‘re recentering themselves.

Most of those ppl want me to say the biggest killer of Black ppl is Black on Black crime

But those same ppl are afraid of Black neighborhoods even though they believe we’re killing each other
It’s interesting that no matter what killer we talk about,

There is less empathy for Black people and more effort put into blaming us for our plight instead of systemic racism.

After all, there are a host of Black ppl who will say, we determine our lives, not others.
EVERYONE’S lives can be changed *some* by factors we can control and we should stay alert to grab hold of those and make the best choices
But EVERYONE’S lives are determined by many EXTERNAL factors; like race.

No one can determine the color of their skin
And as much as people try to deny that race affects how others perceive us, it does.

People can see the same behaviors and actions in 2 people but they have been shown to attribute positive motives and innocence to white ppl
but negative motives and guilt to Black ppl
Let’s look at the way we talk about disease in Black people.
The first of all, ppl LOVE to use the term socio economics when talking about health disparities .

This recenters the conversation about racism in medicine to a conversation about poverty and nonBlack ppl are included https://twitter.com/bedboundbabe/status/1127768769261133825
Equally as awful, these conversations Tend to discount the fact that Black people experience racism regardless of socio economics https://twitter.com/bedboundbabe/status/1049292338445672449
I wrote a piece called Black IS Not A Class https://twitter.com/bedboundbabe/status/1130500998651420673
That piece was inspired by thoughts like those included in this thread (there is an article in the last tweet on the thread) https://twitter.com/bedboundbabe/status/947740685872058368
For all of the well- meaning but racist reasons for the lack of adequate healthcare for Black people,
Conversations never seem to get at the root.
Black patients who go to the doctor are often dismissed because of doctors outright not caring about us being ill
Or in some cases, the doctors are comparing what an illness looks like on whites skin, or lectures on how white people explain symptoms and discomfort
and so we appear mild or to have completely different illnesses. https://twitter.com/bedboundbabe/status/1122864243559346176
This racist medical training starts in medical schools. https://twitter.com/bedboundbabe/status/1063244074524831745
More medical racism: https://twitter.com/bedboundbabe/status/988138021462691840
More medical racism https://twitter.com/bedboundbabe/status/1154197816438329344
So this conversation NEEDS TO STOP just stopping at “let’s educate Black people how to eat and get them to go to the doctor”

No. The conversation needs to be about how all medical professionals are capable of racism and how racism is built into the fabric of our society
