I’ve been experimenting with homemade cloth masks for people w no sewing machine. Want to see?
I read this: https://smartairfilters.com/en/blog/best-materials-make-diy-face-mask-virus/. Takeaway: you want multiple layers + breatheability
And I watched some video tutorials. The bra one. The no-sew origami-fold one.
I can hand-stitch ... badly. I have a very basic sewing kit and standard household junk drawer materials.
Here’s my attempt at a bra-mask. (It’s an old strapless bikini top.) Hilarious, yes, but it’s 3 layers (+ padding!) & comfy. The ear straps are hair elastics, stitched on.
The origami-fold no-sew masks (as demonstrated by the surgeon general) are ok but they don’t stay together well. It’s too tempting to touch them when they slip
But you can stitch the folded handkerchief together with very little skill & effort. Here’s one pinned
Here’s the tutorial on how to fold. This works best with a lightweight 18x18 cloth napkin or handkerchief http://blog.japanesecreations.com/no-sew-face-mask-with-handkerchief-and-hair-tie
The last kind I’m aware of is the bandanna mask. It’s a little different bc bandannas are so big. Tutorial: https://makezine.com/2020/04/06/how-to-fold-a-no-sew-bandana-face-mask/
Similar issue, though. If you don’t stitch it, it’ll slip & unfold & you’ll wind up touching your face to fix it
I don’t like bandanna masks much bc the size means you’ve got two thick layers over your face—which is probably effective, but not comfortable
I also tried kitchen towels. They’re great if you don’t need to breathe while wearing the mask
