Fun story time! Wait until the end… Friday was my fiancé’s birthday and I ordered takeout from @Canlis to cheer him up – turning 30 during COVID is no fun. It did end up cheering him up in more ways than one. Read on... 1/12
The team from Canlis sent an email to all of us who had ordered that evening with some re-heating instructions. They accidentally put all of us (300+ people!) in the cc line…. Whoops. 2/12
At this point, I’m thinking what we all think when we’re on a massive email thread: “please don’t reply all, but if you do.... make it entertaining”. 3/12
The first person to reply all did not disappoint, at least not on the “make it entertaining” front.
4/12

People immediately started replying with some choice words for Mr. “Anything Other Than Steaming Hot”. I too, love good internet snark so settled in to watch this play out. 5/12
But then I thought about it more and started feeling pretty angry. Damn. How lucky are all the people on this thread that @Canlis stayed open and worked their ass off to serve us. That we can even afford this meal at all right now, when so many people can’t. 6/12
Normally I would have said nothing. But the past few weeks have been anything but normal. So I replied with my own snark and a suggestion to donate to @FeedingAmerica 7/12
I figured it would end there. But! It! Did! Not! Next thing I know, tons of people on the thread replied and said they donated, mostly in increments of $125, $250. @CanlisMark even threw in $500. Mr. Steaming Hot even threw in $250. 8/12
Y’all. By the next day this little group of us had raised $10,000 for @feedingamerica !!! 9/12
Now, before you reply to this and say “great job!” let me remind you that all I did here was send one snarky “reply all” email... the people on the thread who took action made this work. How cool is that... one nudge to donate and they did. 10/12
@MatthewHKim also detailed the story on his Twitter thread, and @kslosh picked up Matthew’s story in Geekwire, so that’s pretty cool. 11/12 https://www.geekwire.com/2020/seattle-restaurant-delivery-complaint-reply-email-turns-10k-donation-food-charity/?fbclid=IwAR1M_8-E4EWtxXnaUkiiPdpXAIAPyi1jcnVyxw5-DwFpNAm2bf0bn8MvK7Q
In conclusion, next time you’re dealing with a Mr. Steaming Hot type on a reply all thread, send a snarky email and ask them to donate to @FeedingAmerica... you might be surprised by their response. 12/12
Bonus tweet. @replyall @PJVogt @AGoldmund I have been a long time listener/ big fan and given that this whole thing is literally about a “reply all” thread I thought you’d want to know....
