GOP using stolen Supreme Court seats and a gerrymandered minority legislature to steal further power in Wisconsin. At what point does Evers need to take the extreme step of declaring the entire arrangement illegitimate and use the powers inherent to his office to end this https://twitter.com/mjs_DC/status/1247301655642681348
The 5-4 SCOTUS majority represents
- 2 seats stolen in 2000 by popular vote loser George Bush stealing Florida
- 1 seat stolen in 2016 by using GOP control of the Senate to block Obama's rightful appointment
- 1 seat stolen in 2017 by popular vote loser Trump
The Wisconsin Republicans in the state legislature received fewer votes than the Democrats and only won power due to a clearly unconstitutional gerrymander.
Order the State Police to physically close the polling stations and arrest the members of the Supreme Court if they attempt to seat the judge on the ballot tomorrow. https://twitter.com/ELutske/status/1247309781188014082
Article IV of the United States Constitution guarantees all states a Republican form of governance and the people of each state are the ultimate sovereign. Wisconsin has been broken beyond repair by the GOP and now people's lives are in danger. It has to end somewhere.
Dissolve the State Legislature and Courts and announce that you're conducting fresh elections using fair districts and universal mail in ballots for November, including a plebiscite validating your actions and a reformed state constitution, and that you'll resign if you lose
That's an incredibly serious and unprecedented step but if we're going to start having US states converted to one-party fascism, I'd like to know we at least tried to give their citizens a clear choice to halt it first.
To be clear: I fully expect this would end with Evers in chains given who is in control of the Federal Government but you only get one life to give for your country. American democracy might need more martyrs soon. At least go down fighting https://twitter.com/jonbernhardt/status/1247314838994501632
I don't live in Wisconsin, so it's not really happening to me, but as a patriotic American I am indeed upset seeing my countrymen's rights to choose their own government denied to them https://twitter.com/ACoulombs/status/1247315779370049536
I have no idea how it would play out politically besides the fact the WI state legislature would probably pass a law cancelling the November election and awarding their electoral votes to Trump directly https://twitter.com/cunninghamp220/status/1247316821440634880
Dems gained incredible leverage over this while the stock market was in freefall, but they traded giving virtually unlimited spending authority to the treasury and Fed away for $1200 so now Trump can keep the economy propped up through Nov without them https://twitter.com/whstancil/status/1247308948668952576
The obvious problem with asserting that less than 50% of the vote entitles you to full control of government is that someone else can assert the same thing at the same time and then you wind up sprinting down this road towards violent conflict.
By asserting that, the alternatives you're presenting your opponents are

1) Capitulation

2) Civil War

and 1) is intolerable to a free people. Are Americans still a free people though?
oh no the bad take police are narcing me out to one another. Imagine thinking legal theory applied to

1) an attempt invalidate and circumvent the courts entirely

2) in the Roberts Court era where they'll rule 5-4 for anything the GOP wants https://twitter.com/BadEconTakes/status/1247323513678999552
