Ok, time for another childhood Sonic storytime, this time it& #39;s about my first experiences with the genesis games.
Now as someone who at the time only had a PS1, PS2, and PS3, how did I decide to go about playing these games? Well, it turns out the answer was right under my nose.

For some reason there was already a copy of Sonic Mega Collection Plus in the house. The only memories I have of it was a vague memory of my Dad and my older brother playing as Knuckles in Mushroom Hill zone. So since I had the goal in mind to beat the original versions...
of the stages present in Sonic Generations, I thought this handy collection would make for a great start. I was finally playing what I used to just look at for some periods of time despite not really liking Sonic until 2009. I even thought Tails and Knuckles were girls just...
from looking at the cover, but I& #39;m getting off track. I popped in that PS2 disc and finally started playing. Now I can& #39;t exactly remember whether I played Sonic 1 or Sonic & Knuckles first, but I& #39;m going to assume it was Sonic 1 because of my very first experience with it.
I booted up the game from there and saw the title screen. Now at this point, many people know there was a press start message that was accidentally hidden, but hey, it& #39;s pretty much common sense to press the start button to start a game, right? There& #39;s no way someone...
would have no idea what to do at the title screen, right? Well, wrong. I just stayed on the title screen until the demo started playing, and I just pushed the buttons along with the demo until it suddenly stopped so that it could show the title screen again.
Now this didn& #39;t set any alarms off in my head until just after the Spring Yard zone demo, when it looped back to the Green Hill demo I finally thought something was off about all of this. I think I asked for help? I can& #39;t exactly remember, but somehow the whole situation...
got figured out. It didn& #39;t really help that the controller I used at the time wasn& #39;t an official PS2 controller, but a transparent MadCatz controller that pretty much camouflaged the start button with the rest of the controller. But yeah, I was finally playing Sonic 1,
for real this time. I had a generally enjoyable experience with Green Hill, that is until act 2 where I got stuck at the area with those vertically moving platforms, spikes, and bottomless pits. I just couldn& #39;t get past that part, so I decided to move on to Sonic 2.
Emerald Hill was definitely much easier for me to beat than Green Hill, which could be attributed to Sonic 2& #39;s much more streamlined design. But I still eventually got stuck in Chemical Plant. Do I even need to say which part I got stuck on?
Anyways, it was the part where the poisonous liquid would start to rise in that small chamber with all of those moving stair platforms. Here is where I developed a fear that would take a while for me to get over, the drowning jingle.
For quite a while afterward, I would just turn the volume all the way down on my TV whenever I entered water, knowing that theme could pop up at any moment. So yeah, after Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, it& #39;d make sense to try out Sonic 3 right?
Well no, I just went straight for Sonic & Knuckles. This was because of 2 reasons, I knew that Sky Sanctuary was in this half, and I concluded that Mushroom Hill was probably in this half. Well, I was right, and I went back to having a blast until all of a sudden I ran into...
another obstacle. That being those vines that Sonic would get stuck on until you sop and spin dash. Now, I didn& #39;t read the manuals for any of these games, I didn& #39;t read the manuals for games in general, and I mean, why really do so when you& #39;re used to tutorials...
telling you how to pull off these vital moves? So, I decided to look up how to get past those vines, but of course I noticed that whenever I looked up a playthrough, it wasn& #39;t necessarily for Sonic & Knuckles, it was for Sonic 3 & Knuckles. So what did I do?
I just completely ignored them and tried to find one of Sonic & Knuckles. Now I had no idea about all of the lock-on technology and the formation of the complete Sonic 3 experience, I didn& #39;t find that out until I got until I started searching for reviews,
but that wouldn& #39;t be for quite a while. So since I literally couldn& #39;t see how I could get through Mushroom Hill, I decided to try out Sonic 3. Had a good old time until the very beginning of act 2 which was because of those boulders that you have to spin dash through to get past.
So yeah, I was kinda stuck with all of them. Wasn& #39;t sure what to do so I just turned the game off. Of course I did come back to tackle these games again. I eventually got around to beating Sonic 1. (Using save states between every level and special stage)
After getting past Chemical Plant me and my younger brother tried our hardest to get through one of the loops in Hill Top zone that required either spin dashing through, or rolling through. and I still had pretty sour luck with Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles.
But I eventually found out about these mechanics and a whole lot more about these games which helped a whole lot with beating these games. (Once again, while using save states between every level and special stage.)
I remember how I& #39;d keep those save states with the endings of the games with pride since these were some of my greatest accomplishments at the time. But the one I still hadn& #39;t beaten was Sonic & Knuckles.
Now this roadblock wasn& #39;t because of things I didn& #39;t know or challenges that were too hard to pass, but fear. That& #39;s right, Sandopolis Zone act 2. I used to always use debug mode to just skip that level so that I wouldn& #39;t have to face those ghosts.
Man, this is suddenly getting me thinking about some times I had with Flying Battery where I never really minded the waiting that was present in that level. I was too busy having Sonic head bop to the music by pressing up and down on the d-pad.
Or heck a Sonic 2 memory where I sorta found out about the Super Sonic glitch involving soft locking the game by jumping past the goal post with the chaos emeralds and more than 50 rings, OH HECK just having Sonic and Tails messing around during the scoreboard...
by jumping past the screen and then coming back, I loved pulling that off so much in both Sonic 1 and 2. I also remember finding out how to unlock Sonic 3 & Knuckles in the collection so that I could finally play full intended experience and play around with the hyper forms.
Shoot, ran out of thread space.
But yeah, the point is, I have so many memories just playing the main trilogy here, I haven& #39;t even begun to talk about the spin offs and Game Gear games. But I& #39;ll leave it at this, despite the shoddy sound emulation in this collection,

and the fact there are much better ways to play these games using PC emulation and other sorts of methods, this collection will always have a special place in my heart. With all of the music made for it, with all of the extras included,
(Oh jeez those Sonic Heroes CG cutscenes that were included, i just watched those so many times) it& #39;s not a horrible place to first experience these classics.
Now I need to just end it here or else I& #39;ll spend another hour typing down more memories I had with this collection.

I& #39;ve been listening to "History" this whole time too, so that kinda kept me fueled throughout this thread. If you haven& #39;t go ahead and have a listen yourself. https://youtu.be/yOUUS6JIRQ0 ">https://youtu.be/yOUUS6JIR...
