Our company CEO sends us daily COVID-19 briefs. Today’s brief brought on a lot of anxiety as it tasks us “to prepare for the surge of patients that are expected to visit our EDs in the next several weeks.” It’s impossible to avoid the news since we live it firsthand at work.
We start and end the day with these briefs, and each one seems to be more taxing than the last.
The unfortunate truth about the healthcare industry is that it’s just that: an industry. It’s a giant financial scam and so much goes on behind-the-scenes that the average person doesn’t know about. It’s more than the tense dramas you see on TV.
The health care industry is made up of service workers, registration reps, insurance verifiers, legal teams, administrative teams, financial office staff, and security, among many others, who risk their lives daily to support our staff in the frontlines.
We do so much work behind-the-scenes to ensure the hospital system runs like a well-oiled machine. To ensure doctors and nurses are paid, to ensure patients are accurately billed and legally represented, to ensure patients and employees are fed,
and to ensure facilities are sanitized and maintained to the strictest health standards. Many of us, although blessed to still have a source of income, can’t work from home.
We’ve all had to give up things we love to flatten the curve. I’m almost certainly going to miss the birth of my first niece because of this pandemic. I don’t know when I’ll be able to hold her, but until the time comes, I’m practicing strict isolation at work and at home.
I urge you to do the same. This thread isn’t a solicitation for sympathy, praise, advice or words of encouragement. I’m just screaming into the void. Please stay home.
