Hey y’all, I want to have a chat about privilege and online drag shows. Buckle in, but also I’d like this to be a civil conversation.

I have seen people say that online drag is a great equalizer, but I find that is not the case. Online reach / audience size is very real!
I am seeing incredible lineups for large online digital drag shows, but I have also noticed the same performers in many of these shows. These are very talented individuals with, of course, a large online following. This is advantageous for everyone involved.
Like an in person drag show, this generates more money for everyone involved because there is larger reach which translates to a bigger audience, more tips, etc.

How can a talented performer that has not spent time becoming popular digitally compete with that in the bedroom?
I specifically think about trans women of color, performers who do a lot of competitions to generate income, and marginalized groups that do not have the privilege of just going out and getting a temporary job in this time.

A lot of talent is slept on due to scene politics.
If you are a performer with a large following and are asked to be in a digital show that generate income for you, I’m not asking you not to do the show. What I would like people to consider is, asking the booker to also include someone you know who is talented and in need.
If you don’t have the option to get someone else added to the cast, consider donating some tips to those in need.

This is an opportunity for people in a position of privilege to help marginalized performers. Please take that opportunity, our community needs it badly.

Thanks🧡
Oh! Please retweet this thread to spread the word.

We need to help our drag siblings. I don’t want to see anyone homeless or hungry because they’re not “cool enough” to be in an online show. That’s bullshit.
