April 6, 1865 finds President Lincoln remaining at City Point, VA. Today he is joined by his wife Mary, U.S. Senator Charles Sumner and others aboard the steamer "The River Queen." Mrs. Lincoln brings her own friends this time and has no further contact with Julia Grant.
Lincoln informs Grant today in 1865of Secretary of State Seward's carriage accident the previous day. The Secretary is in much pain, but Lincoln doesn't yet leave for Washington.
Lincoln also tells Grant of his meeting with former SCOTUS justice John Campbell and Lincoln's terms of peace. But he directs Grant to continue the actions against the Army of Northern Virginia.
Lincoln has also by now in 1865 told Maj. Gen. Godfrey Weitzel to permit the men who had made up the VA legislature to reconvene if they would vote to rejoin the Union. Lincoln tells Grant of this plan, but also says he expects nothing to come of it. He's right.
