Teacher-led instruction does NOT require daily live video conferencing. There are significant equity issues w/this approach (too much bandwidth/data, young people working daytime hours to support families/selves, students w/large families who need to share limited tech, etc.). https://twitter.com/LizFelguerias/status/1246959590035644416
I connected directly with many of my students today, had ongoing conversations with them, and did not use live video to do so. Education workers, live video is ONE tool of many. If you're not comfortable using it, you're not obligated to do so.
If students *request* live videoconferencing to explain concepts or to demonstrate methods for hands-on courses, I'm happy to do so! If students decide they want to have a group chat to complete an assignment, I'm here for that!
But I will *never* insist that students must attend synchronous video classes. I will never insist that they show great vulnerability by sharing the inside of their homes to their peers. I will not insist that there's a *right* time for them to engage w/work.
Our students are spiralling right now. When I asked what they want to focus on once we establish their desired final mark, you know what they said?

Mental health.

I will do everything I can to ensure I'm not increasing their distress.
