Let me talk about why I think Hinata Hyuga is a good character and why she's my favorite Naruto character and unlike a certain fandom, I don't need to bash any other characters to compliment Hinata's character.
One of the notable things about Hinata's character is her love for Naruto Uzumaki. When I was a kid, I sympathized with Naruto and it was great to see someone be initially positive to Naruto. I also never seen characters like Hinata, at the time, who are shy and pure hearted.
Hinata never was interested in Naruto for shallow features. It was a deep crush from admiration for who he is and you can tell because Hinata was the only one to root for Naruto while every girl was going crazy for Sasuke.
One of the common criticisms Hinata gets is that her character is heavily based on Naruto and to that I ask:what about Neji and Gaara? Their characters changed entirely because of Naruto. Look at Sasuke. He did almost all the things he did in the manga because of Itachi.
Are they bad characters because of this? The answer is no because in reality, people influence people. We learn and grow from each other. Naruto is a big part of Hinata's character but it's not the only part. Her crush and eventual love for Naruto caused her character to progress
From a gentle, shy girl who had her confidence absolutely crushed by her father to a woman who will take on a god by herself with the odds clearly against her and put aside her feelings and greatest desires for the greater good of everyone.
One of the things I relate to Hinata was her self-confidence issues. I didn't have much confidence in myself as a kid and seeing Hinata's mental ordeal really spoke to me. I already sympathized with Naruto but here we see Hinata was also suffering and being regarded as a failure+
Which made me ship her with Naruto even more. But with Hinata, she was deemed a lost cause by her OWN FATHER. Call me crazy but I don't think you're helping your child's mentality by calling them a loser. And her cousin(who she considered as her brother)didn't help either.
Despite all this, Hinata still made the choice to be the person she wants to be and didn't let harsh words keep her down, thanks to Naruto. Not to mention, she looked past the problems between her and Neji and showed their clan how irrelevant what branches they're from.
I said this before in another post but, to this day, I've never seen a side character like Hinata become so popular and relevant, especially with the short amount of screentime she got, that she got a canon movie practically about her. It honestly blows my mind.
Hinata was introduced as Naruto's love interest. That's her role in the story. Imo, what makes a good character is how well they perform their role in the story if or when the time comes. She helped progress the plot when she was around and is fairly relevant to her world.+
Sounds like a good character to me. Hinata's goal was never becoming heiress or changing the Hyuga clan. Her goal was changing herself, overcoming her feelings of inferiority and become stronger to protect those she cares about.
These are my overall thoughts on Hinata Hyuga. She's a fine character to me and one of the few characters in the series to have such a noticeable, positive difference from how she was back then to how she is now.
