Honestly, I don't understand how this can keep happening besides the obvious: industry manipulation. Our streams weren't counted properly last month and now, their album sales aren't tracked properly either? Y'all got something against groups like BTS & 5SOS or something? 😡 https://twitter.com/Tha5SOSFamily/status/1247128864595292160
Alright, my moment of impulsiveness aside...
I'm seeing recommended tweets talking about how when it happened to BTS, we didn't get media coverage the way that it's being given to 5SOS now. Yeah, fair. We've known media will not care as much about a non-English speaking group.
We've known Western media tends to be xenophobic. Whether that's because of genuine xenophobia or them believing their audience only likes and cares about Western artists, it doesn't matter. Fact of the matter is, they do often use BTS for attention or clout or clicks or whatever
but when BTS encounters industry issues/discrimination, they will be silent and won't fight with us against it. It's true and there are receipts to prove it. It's a horrible reality and double standard they've set up to keep non-Western artists out of the market.
BUT! That being
said, there is no reason not to stand up when something is wrong.
This is a general statement.
Whether you want to rationalize it as "it may happen to you so you gotta fight with others to prevent that later" or not, we still should stand up.
You can say it doesn't seem like a
Billboard issue but y'know, it's really hard to say that. Even if on the surface it looks like it was simply some kind of miscommunication or logistical error that resulted in albums being shipped in advance, I cannot help doubting the truth of that. It's simply too big of an
issue and for a company that's done this same bundling thing so many times before with different artists and without those same issues, it feels even more unlikely. I just doubt it's simply a Ticketmaster issue or simply a Billboard issue. I feel it could be bigger than that.
That's all I'm saying. It seems like an industry-wide issue. Chart manipulation is not exactly uncommon. It's not exactly unheard of. Charts, as irrelevant as they can be, are still often used to decide radio plays, playlisting, etc. so yes, from an industry standpoint, if you
can exchange high results on charts for more streams and plays, it's beneficial to spread the music and earn more money. I'm just saying.
And now I'm sounding super conspiracy theorist-y so I'm gonna stop here. I don't know if this thread's logic flows well, but I'm just saying
the industry IS messed up. We gotta fight for what we think is right. We can't just keep to our own fandoms and keep putting other fandoms down. We gotta work together. We also can't rely on media, ever, because they're chasing their clicks and whatever hot topic they can get
clicks on. Frankly, I feel so disappointed in them and I just don't care anymore. We also gotta think about different consequences. How are we going to protest without consequences for the ones in question?
One way, is simply to not give them power. In other words, who gives a
crap about what they (charts) say. Doesn't matter to me, we stay damn unbothered. After all, they're clearly not accurate anyway, so why give them the power of relevance?
Another way, is on a publicity level, I suppose. This is less on us and more on our respective groups' teams.
Those who genuinely care can get interviews/time with the groups we love most and we will naturally follow them and watch and give them more opportunities for advertising revenue or whatever it is. Those who are jumping on a bandwagon can take a hike and keep recycling the same
old news they took from 20 other irrelevant sources that don't actually care for our group. If we can get that clear, who is genuine and who is not, honestly, those who aren't will take a hit.
Another way is if our groups' companies have their own music market. Why rely on iTunes
or Amazon music or whatever? Let us buy directly from the source and we can give you the money directly without need for commission. And for streaming...hm...that one might need a bit more time to work out a solution but let us know how to get the most money to you 'cause I wanna
support you, not necessarily the streaming company (no offense).
I don't know where my brain is going on this tangent anymore so I'll really stop here. It's just-- the music industry is frustrating me, even when I wanna work in it, and I'm just so disappointed.
