it knocks out the iron ion and takes its place, rendering it unable to transport o2/co2

you can give a patient all the O2 you want and ventilate them, but if their blood cannot carry that O2 or clear CO2, it doesn't matter.
assuming this is correct, these patients need working red cells, not oxygen.
