Today I was rejected from a VAP job search for which I had to write AN ENTIRE NEW SYLLABUS at the additional materials stage while a pandemic was quite obviously coming our way. To that I say shame shame shame: not for the rejection, for the unpaid, unnecessary labor.
Surely it it's useless to ask for an Intro to American Studies Syllabus without suggesting how the course fits into dept’s curriculum, what has worked in the past and what hasn’t, etc. Asking for a specific syllabus without performing collegiality is exploitative and wasteful.
As the pandemic was coming toward me & I was trying to plan how to work from home & how to protect asthmatic self from getting sick, I was forced to do ~20 hours of work taking away from crucial sleep. Predictably, I got sick with a productive cough. I had to quarantine.
I live in a three generation house & I have chronic asthma which means I have to be especially careful. So I had to stay on different floor from where my parents live, tho we share a kitchen. It is predictable that I will get a respiratory illness when I don’t get enough sleep.
I’m not saying where this was cuz it doesn’t matter. This happened at your university. In your department. They could have easily decided who was worth interviewing with cover letter, writing sample, generic teaching portfolio. But they didn’t. Be better than [redacted].
