good afternoon twitter this is an experiment in being clueless in public

for the next hour I am going to live-tweet and possibly film myself trying to understand novel math concepts

if u offer unsolicited advice of any sort I will warn once, then mute you 😀
ok want to do something novel

we have a truly ridiculous # of textbooks so it shouldn't be hard to find something novel that I miiiight be able to understand

no idea what real analysis is so let's do that
ok I have seen these words from calculus maybe this will be more familiar territory than I expected

incidentally that calc professor was the only hot professor I ever had

he looked like mark ruffalo but he was much smarter
what a pretentious name

"real analysis"

I'm sure there's a reason but tbh this reeks of ingroup status jostling
hahahahahahah this is so pretentious

or insecure

or both

lmao
gdi did this book trick me

is this just calculus in a different hat
forgot which number systems are which

googling
I remember being irritated that one of the number systems gets to be called "real"

velveteen rabbit but for math

if u love the natural numbers enough, they will become real after you recover from scarlet fever and have to throw all your possessions into the woods
fucking tease you open talking about the real #'s and then spend the rest of the page talking about rational numbers, which I hate (for aesthetic reasons)

ok walking through the proof that r^2=2 does not have a solution in the rational #'s

makes sense ok moving on
god this textbook is full of itself lmao
"Set theoretically the rational numbers can be defines as sets of ordered pairs..."

I do not know what "ordered" means

DON'T TELL ME
oookay I GET it but I do not like the language it feels very slippery and hard to translate into a verbal explanation of my own
yada yada set operations I have seen this many times

gonna close the book and see how far I can get remembering this tho
sets from memory

I will not elaborate
in which I am a bit confused and angry

also idk what makes a fixed set distinct from a regular ol set
what is the difference between a relative complement and a complement I have legit never seen this before I hate the new notation

WAIT is there a time limit on videos uploaded to twitter D:
this helps not at all!
just gonna not tweet more about sets im so bored of sets i know i said one hour but im gonna keep going til i see something alien
oh cartesian products are pretty I like that
time for functions

god this book is a tease it isn't getting to the thing it said was critical until the end of ch. 1

devious
confused about the nuance of saying f is from/on A into/onto/to B

clearly these things are different
I will just have to make mistakes until it makes sense
wtf is the projection function
why did the book stop giving me pictures 😱
legit angry nobody taught me basic things about sets in middle school
for all my whining I am enjoying this quite a lot and wish they had taught me this instead of the precalc->calc

textbook author can have a little sense of superiority, as a treat
ok done for today folks
