Recent snapshots of the Black experience during COVID-19 paint a grim yet unsurprising picture of how institutional racism magnifies the vulnerability of Black folks in so many facets of life. Foremost, the high rates of contraction & mortality. 1/4
Black efforts to take caution to maximize safety are complicated by racism. From food deserts making it harder to store up on essentials while self-quarantining, to fears of being racially profiled while wearing a protective mask 2/4
Meanwhile, Black folks in the professional sector—including many of my academic colleagues—are subjected to coordinated racist cyber attacks while trying to conduct their work remotely. 3/4
These are just a few of the ways Black folks face a heightened sense of precarity in this moment. Because racism doesn’t abate during crisis. It augments the crisis.
So any emergent political movement in this time not centered on dismantling racial capitalism is fatally flawed
