WHY IS THERE A MUG SHOT CHALLENGE, WHAT THE FUCK??? DON& #39;T NORMALIZE VIOLENCE!!! DON& #39;T NORMALIZE CRIME!!! THESE ARE NOT JOKES OR TRENDS OR AESTHETICS i& #39;m done with this world
This was a heat-of-the-moment tweet bec I saw photos and got so mad!!! There are actual people who get abused and harmed!!! And these idiots have the nerve to “apply” bruises and cuts to themselves and pose sexily?? That’s FUCKED UP.
Plus it being a mug shot— what, so you look abused but u’re really the abuser??? I don’t get it? What the fuck kind of message are u sending???
VIOLENCE IS ALL TOO REAL FOR MANY PEOPLE. YOU DON’T GET TO ROMANTICIZE IT AND TURN IT INTO SOME TWISTED AESTHETIC.

Seeing discussions asking “how is this different from...?” and i’m opening this up because I think it’s worth discussing:
1. Special effects in movies? They tell a narrative and don’t portray abuse / violence just for the sake of it as a TREND.
1. Special effects in movies? They tell a narrative and don’t portray abuse / violence just for the sake of it as a TREND.
2. Singers w/ bloody album covers (e.g. The Weeknd, Billie Eilish, etc.) I think this ties in with the previous tweet about having a concept/narrative— the depiction is there to tell a story. But I admit that it does also aestheticize violence in a way and that’s problematic.
3. Halloween? Gory visual/makeup effects here are usually done in portraying FICTIONAL characters. If not, it’s done so exaggeratedly that it does not look like real-life abuse (which a lot of these “mug shots” are like).
4. I think the main thing that I find so twisted in this challenge is that it’s turned into a trend. It normalizes violence by inciting everyday people to “apply” bruises/cuts/etc to themselves for the sake of following said trend. There’s no real purpose to it.
5. “I just wanted to show off my makeup skills”— You can do that in SO MANY other ways that aren’t insensitive. And let’s be honest, what’s a major reason people do trends? Clout. That’s NOT a valid reason to do this.
6. Plus the way this violence is depicted— sexily / seductively—is a disturbing fetishization of what is a hurtful reality for many.
7. It’s not too deep, just chill” —Look, what people choose to aestheticize have real-world implications. Remember poverty porn? Or that photoshoot that romanticized rape?
These, along w/ violence, are difficult and traumatic realities for many.

8. Putting a glamor filter on these issues minimizes how real and harmful they are. Turning them into an aesthetic trivializes the situation.
9. As with many other things, it’s only right to look into these trends and question if they’re problematic and done wrongly. And to me, this mug shot challenge is incredibly insensitive.
