I've discovered something AMAZING. Did you know there was an 1985 charity song/video made by nearly 70 of your favorite teen TV stars? (the casts of Punky Brewster, Facts of Life, etc) No one does, and until yesterday, neither did I. Strap in, people. #lovesgonnafindaway 1/
This week back in 1985, We Are The World was #1 on the Hot 100. It's success created a lot of similar tracks. That's fair, WATW was a response to Do They Know It's Christmas. All the cash from USA For Africa's single ($63m in '85 money) helped with famine relief. Awesome. 2/
(This is where I remind you of the metal version: Hear'n Aid. Not sure how much it raised. ) 2.5/
At the same time on NBC, there was a Saturday morning cartoon called Kidd Video. My 8 y.o. self freaking LOVED Kidd Video. No one else remembers it, it seems. It was a kids cartoon answer to early MTV and had all of those great 80s trappings. 3/
Big hair, synth-y pop music.. a teenage band gets kidnapped to "the flipside." An animated world where they.. fight an evil overlord? I was never 100% on that. Didn't matter, they'd shove in a Glass Tiger video to take your mind off of the 'plot.' #dontforgetmewhenimgone 4/
Apparently professional TV people were sure Kidd Video was going to be a classic and go beyond 2 seasons (no and no) so some Very Smart L.A. Person decided THEY SHOULD DO A CHARITY SINGLE. Everyone's doing it. Call it Kidds For Kids In Africa. All proceeds go to UNICEF. Nice. 5/
Get every star under voting age in a studio to film a video/record a song. Easy as that. Again, almost 70 child stars involved! Even if you don't know some names, any child of the 80s will watch in slo-mo to pick everyone out. Holy crap, a v sweaty @ToddBridges is right there.6/
Stars like @SeanAstin. @MindyCohn. @Ali_Sweeney. @MalcolmJamalWar having a blast. @nia_peeples. @WilliamZabka. @DohertyShannen in braces. Even @ReginaKing. The song of course, is well, crap. The kindest way I can put "Love's Gonna Find a Way" is 'heartfelt.' Yeah. That'll do. 7/
Sounds like something you'd remember, right?? The cast of Kidd Video takes the lead on this song. Probably for the best. I almost forgot to mention @RobbieRist1 (unfairly often known solely as Cousin Oliver— he's had an amazing career) was the bass player in Kidd Video. 8/
SO HOW'S THIS THE FIRST TIME YOU'VE HEARD OF IT? Well, it doesn't seem that it was ever released! It doesn't exist on discogs or eBay at all. How does that work as a *charity* single?!? Naturally, the video lives on. (FYI: no audio for the 1st 30 sec) 9/
The big q: why didn't it get released? Kidd Video got cancelled a month or so after the recording. Maybe that's it? It doesn't appear to have made much of a ripple outside of a couple news pieces. Maybe the lack of publicity got it scuttled by the suits? We may never know. 10/
Was this whole thing a scam? Perhaps scamola? UNICEF was so excited about this, they made each Kidd Video actor "Youth Ambassadors." Every bit of news coverage from then says that this is a Thing and it's Happening. Then: nothing. Also, who tf bails on UNICEF?! 11/
Someone knows why this disappeared. Please DM me, I need to know. Thanks to the Kidd Video fan site (yup!) for the info in this thread and for keeping the candle burning for those who laid around the living room Saturday mornings eating Sugar Pops. http://kvflipside.org/  12/
It could've been the track you skip on the soundtrack of your childhood, but it wasn't meant to be. This pop culture nugget was buried deep, but having way too much time on my sanitized hands led me to it. I guess *love* did find a way. Wait. No! 13/
While the single was never released, if you enjoyed it and can, donate some money to charity. Maybe do it under the name of Kidd Video? ;) Bonus news coverage of the recording w/ some soundbites from @batemanjason, @cheriejohnson75 and Todd Bridges. 14/fin
